Previewing / Pulling from a draft entry for the purpose of pre-scheduled social media posts.

Our client is considering using your module to be able to preview blog posts that are not due to be published yet. They also want to be able to pre-schedule posts on a number of social networks, but want to know whether the various social networks will be able to pull image previews / Meta Data from a draft entry in EE? / Is there a "live URL" for draft entries that have not yet been published?

    Hi Rick,

All entries have a 'live' URL - exactly what this is will depend on how your site is made. This is not something that BWF creates.

You can preview an entry before it is live and then publish it with its entry date set to the future as a way of scheduling it.

I'm not sure how you would pull content from it into social media - via an RSS feed? If you could provide a but more information on what you want to do we will try and advise.

    Best wishes,

    Thanks Malcolm,

What the client needs to do is this:

Create a blog entry in EE
Preview it to get formatting right
Schedule it for a future date
At the same time, and before the publishing date for the entry, they need to schedule posts on Facebook, Twitter, G+, LinkedIn etc that will go out on the day the blog goes live

If you schedule a post on a Social Network that includes a URL, if that URL is live, it usually pulls in a Thumbnail preview and some meta data. The question is, will this work when an entry is qued for publishing in EE, but not yet fully “live”?

    Hope that makes more sense?

Yes, it does make sense. The answer is no - if the entry is not live nothing will be available at the end of it standard URL

The only way to do this is to enable External Previews in the BWF settings, This is a feature which allows you so share previews by merit of an authentication token appended to the preview URL.

These tokens have a time to live which defaults to 24 hours - if you need this to be longer you have to add a variable to your site's config

    $config['bwf_preview_token_ttl'] = 100;

The only downside is that the URL you submit won't be pretty and also won't be the 'live' URL.

    I hope this helps.

    Best wishes,

    Thanks Malcolm,
If they use the token URL with a decent expiry what happens after it expires? Does it 404 or would it redirect to the final live URL?
If it doesn’t redirect, perhaps we could solve with a 301? (That would seem like a massive ball ache for some social media posts though, but I am just thinking out loud).

It depends on what the live URL is - if you're using standard EE URL structure (e.g. template-group / template / entry) then once the entry is live the preview URL will still work even if the token has expired.

If not - say you're doing custom routing. Then you will need to set up a 301 or such like - there is no auto redirecting.
